How to be a podcast guest
Being a good podcast guest is less about fame and more about fit. Hosts want guests who suit their audience, reply quickly and show up prepared. Here is how to become that guest.
1. Decide what you can talk about
Pick two or three topics you can speak about for 30 to 60 minutes without notes. Specific beats broad: "pricing for freelance designers" is easier to book than "business".
- Write one sentence on who you help and how.
- List three stories you can tell well.
- Note one useful takeaway listeners can act on.
2. Build a guest profile hosts can scan
Hosts decide fast. Give them a clear headshot, a short bio, your topics, sample questions and links to past interviews or a short audio or video pitch.
3. Get your recording setup right
- A USB or XLR microphone, not laptop audio.
- Wired headphones to stop echo.
- A quiet room with soft surfaces.
- A stable internet connection and a backup plan.
4. Find shows that fit
Look for shows whose listeners actually need your topic. A smaller show with the right audience often does more for you than a big show with the wrong one. Listen to at least one episode before you reach out.
5. Make it easy to book you
Share a scheduling link, reply within a day or two and confirm the time in writing. Reliability is what gets you invited back and recommended to other hosts.
6. Help after the episode
Share the episode when it goes live, thank the host and leave an honest review. That goodwill turns one interview into several.
Podcast Matching Done Differently
